At this time, due to an Executive Order issued by President Trump on January 20, 2025, the Department of State is requiring that U.S. Passports reflect a person's sex assigned at birth. This means the Department of State is no longer issuing new U.S. Passports with a gender marker reflecting a person's gender identity, nor amending existing Passports to reflect a person's gender identity. They have also stopped issuing "X" gender markers on Passports. The White House has made clear that individuals who currently have a valid U.S. Passport reflecting their gender identity (as opposed to sex assigned at birth) will not have their Passports invalidated or confiscated, etc., but that upon renewal of the Passport, the gender marker will likely be changed back to reflect the person's sex assigned at birth. If you are a transgender person and you have a Passport, DO NOT send in your Passport to seek any amendments until we get more clarity about how the Department of State is going to process Passports under the new executive order. We will keep you posted on the status of the implementation of this discriminatory new policy. For more information about the recent anti-trans executive orders, you can download this statement from SLC's Trans Rights Director Simone Chriss.
