Step 2 - Update social security Card

read before proceeding

At this time, due to an Executive Order issued by President Trump on January 20, 2025, the federal government is requiring that people's Social Security record reflect the person's sex assigned at birth. This means the Social Security Administration is no longer amending gender markers on social security records to reflect a person's gender identity. There is no reason to believe at this time that people who have already amended the gender marker on their social security record will have their gender markers changed back to their sex assigned at birth, but we are awaiting guidance and clarity around how the SSA is going to implement the new executive order.  If you are a transgender person, we advise that you do not seek any amendments to your social security record until we have more information about what the federal government plans to do. We will keep you posted on the status of the implementation of this discriminatory new policy. For more information about the recent anti-trans executive orders, you can download this statement from SLC's Trans Rights Director Simone Chriss.
Please note - The "Update Social Security Card" step is necessary whether you are updating just your legal name, updating just your gender marker, or updating both legal name and gender marker.  If you need to update both your legal name and gender marker, please select the first option below (this is the most common option, and it is easiest to do both at the same time).
