Make sure you're ready

The process to petition for a name change requires you to complete several tasks, so it is important to make sure that you are committed to this process.  Of course, we've made it much easier with this step-by-step guide!

To be eligible to apply for a name change:
  • You must have lived in Florida for at least six (6) months
  • You will need a valid Driver License or State ID with your current address.
  • Your civil rights must not be in a suspended status

Here are some important things for you to know about the petition process:​​
  • The total amount of fees for the entire process are about $450.00.  If you can't afford this, this guide will help you apply for a waiver.
  • The process will require you to print and fill out several forms.
  • The process will require you to have your fingerprints taken and attend a court hearing.
  • The process usually takes at least two months from start to end.
